Why does overgrazing damage soil?

The answer

When animals graze plants too short or stay on the same ground too long, roots weaken, bare patches appear and hooves compact the surface, especially when it is wet. Bare, compacted ground sheds water and erodes easily, and gateways and water points often turn into gullies. Grazing itself is not the problem; well-managed grazing can be compatible with healthy soil. Giving pasture rest and moving animals regularly helps plants and soil recover.
