Should I test my soil, and how often?
The answer
Yes, testing is worthwhile before you plan fertiliser or lime, when you suspect a problem such as salinity or acidity, and when the site history raises contamination concerns. Many growers repeat routine tests every few years to track change. Use the same sampling method and depth each time so results are comparable, and send samples to a laboratory when you need measured values rather than a rough guide. Keep the results in a simple soil journal.
