Can home test kits detect contamination?
The answer
No, not reliably. Home kits are mainly useful for a rough pH reading and basic nutrient checks, and they cannot dependably detect metals or organic pollutants. Contamination is usually invisible and odourless, so concern should come from the site's history, such as former industry, fuel storage, heavy traffic, waste disposal or old buildings. If that applies, use an accredited laboratory with a sensible sampling plan, particularly before growing food or building a play area.
