Soil structure

Definition

Soil structure is the arrangement of soil particles into aggregates and the pores between them. Good structure lets roots, water and air move freely, holds moisture for plants and resists erosion. Large pores drain excess water, while fine pores store water that plants can use. Structure is lost through compaction, working wet soil, crusting and falling organic matter, and it is far easier to protect than to rebuild. A simple check is to dig a spade-sized block and see how it breaks apart. See also: Aggregate, Compaction, Infiltration, and the guide "Soil Compaction and the Loss of Soil Structure".
